From 30 April

Betty set to brave it for charity as part of the Truro & Penwith College Fal River Festival.

Cornish icon and Skinners Brewery mascot, Betty Stogs, will be abseiling from the tower of the National Maritime Museum to help raise money for charity.

The third annual event, which takes place on Sunday, June 3 and is organised by BF Adventure, forms part of the Truro & Penwith College Fal River Festival.

Money raised during the day, which totaled £2,000 in 2011, goes to help BF Adventure with its work to support disadvantaged and disabled children in Cornwall.

BF Adventure CEO, Adrian Richards, said: 'Over the last two years we’ve had a fantastic mix of people brave enough to take on the challenge.

'This included a 60-year-old lady who had overcome illness and was scared of heights, as well as a guy on his stag do who had no idea what his friends had planned for him.

'We have also had a group of BF Adventure volunteers and former clients supporting us.

'It’s going to be great to have Betty leading the way this year.'

Intrepid souls

Over 120 people have taken part in the last two years and organisers are hoping more intrepid souls will want to abseil down the 95ft tower, which overlooks Falmouth harbour.

Adrian advises anyone wanting to take part to book in advance, however, there will be first come first served slots available on the day.

Truro & Penwith College Fal River Festival director, Toby Budd, said: 'This a great opportunity to raise some money for a fantastic charity, as well as have a great view across Falmouth harbour.

'We’re looking forward to seeing Betty abseil. I just hope that, if she’s wearing her dress, she has suitable underwear on as we don’t want to scare people off!'

Registration costs £12 and anyone 11 years old or over can take part. The event runs from 10am to 4pm.
