The Lander Gallery’s Summer Show :: Beside the Seaside - Beside the Sea

from 01/07/2009 until 05/09/2009.

This year the Lander's summer exhibition is a celebration of the Cornish seaside with paintings of the sea, sands and rocks from the cliffs of North Cornwall coast to sand dunes on the Isles of Scilly. Families sunbathing, children playing on the beach and surfers catching a wave, all feature in this sunshine show.

The gallery is showing some of its regular exhibiting artists such as Caroline Atkinson from Newlyn whose paintings of the sand dunes and long grass on the beaches around Penwith and the Isles of Scilly depicts the softer, gentle side of Cornwall's coast.

The gallery is also pleased to introduce new artists in all its exhibitions, and the summer show is no exception with the stunningly detailed paintings of Chris Edwards. Chris is based in Bude, in North Cornwall and her oil paintings capture the rugged rocky coastline as well as the wide sandy beaches.

Also new to the gallery is Catherine Harvey Jefferson whose bold, bright impressionist paintings of the coast around Sennen and Godrevy are a breath of fresh, Cornish sea air.

Lizard based artist, Martin Grimshaw who regularly exhibits at Lander Gallery, manages to capture all the power of the elements, as well as the rocks and sea of the Lizard coastline in a his very expressive gestural paintings.

People being by the seaside are also featured in many of the works of art included in this holiday time show. Richard Lannowe Hall, makes the surfers walking along the shore on their way to catch a wave the focus for a series of paintings included here. Pamela Slater paints the activities of life on the beach for all the family.

The show also has many paintings of the sea in all its moods which can be observed all round the county, whether it is the pounding waves on Chapel Porth beach on the North coast captured by local artist Paul Nicholls, or the representation of a wave purely for its aesthetic form by watercolourist Roger Porter- Butler.
Stewart Lowdon, another watercolourist, uses a very different style to paint the cliffs of the north coast near his base at Wadebridge.

The shores of the Helford river are depicted in a semi abstract way by mixed media artist Michael Sanders. Celia Jayne uses the delicate and difficult medium of pastel to capture the stunning sunsets seen on the North coast near Padstow.

There is also a wide range of ceramics on display, including Sarah Perry's sea and beach inspired earthenware vases and bowls. Along with fishy dishies and vases by Michele Cowmeadow,
