WELCOME TO KING HARRY'S CORNWALL /ferries

THE TWO-and-a-half year old King Harry Ferry was recently taken out of the water and given a clean bottom to increase fuel efficiency.

Ten men worked around the clock to pressure wash the hull and apply anti fouling paint to the areas exposed to the wind and water.

The ferry’s sacrificial anodes, which prevent the hull from corroding, were also renewed; and the chain balance weights in the chain pits were increased to keep tension on the chains which in turn keep the ferry inline with the slipways in heavy winds and tides.

Technical manager, Mike Clay, said the work is the first to be carried out since the new ferry went into service. “We are really pleased with the way the new ferry is performing and this work – particularly the pressure washing which will help us increase fuel efficiency.

“A lot of our maintenance work is planned for the evenings when the service stops running but unfortunately this had to be done in full light at a low tide, so we had to stop running for 24 hours.”
