Place Ferry opens early to save walkers' legs

from 01/04/2008 until 01/08/2008.

A little ferry which runs from Place Creek on the Roseland Peninsula to St Mawes has started its season early to help walkers complete the South West Coast Path.
The Place Ferry, which seats just 12 people, has introduced a 0930 crossing to its regular half-hourly schedule - and will also be running 224 days this year, which is longer than ever before. Operator of the service, Cornwall Ferries Ltd, bought the ferry in July 2005 and since then has gradually added two more months to the operating season.
Garrick Royle, operations manager for Cornwall Ferries Ltd, said: ''The ferry is an important part of the well-known South West Coast Path and it is great to be operating so early on in the year. We are always trying to extend the operating period of our services in an effort to extend the season and have been able to do so with the Place Ferry thanks to support from the West Cornwall Rural Transport Partnership. Many walkers have commented on how nice it is to be able to rest their legs for the 10-15 crossing and how stunning the scenery is.''

Each year the little ferry runs from Easter to October, seven days a week and completes about 8,000 journeys a year. Just over 4,500 people used the ferry last year - and the skipper, Mark Cairns, lost count of how many dogs climbed on board too.
He said: "I really enjoy meeting our passengers and with the new extended timetable I feel we are offering a fantastic service for walkers and locals - and their dogs - using us to get to St Mawes. Many locals use the ferry to explore the Roseland and St Anthony's Church, St Anthony Lighthouse, St Anthony Head and the stunning beaches of Little and Great Molunan are all within walking distance of the ferry's landing spot in Place.
